A Season's Requiem

Written in a hotel room in Toronto; July 2004.

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray to God that my faith I shall keep
But if God decrees thou shalt never awaken
I pray that my soul shall also be taken.

At the onset of dawn, when the morning doth glow,
I shall weep for thee, dearest, and no-one shall know!
But grant, if a merciful god hears my cries,
I can be with thee simply by closing my eyes

For I am guard of thy chamber! I banish the light
From this year: to thee, the length of one night
But for me, an age of woe and distress!
Fear not: it shall ne'er make me love thee less.

But why should thy slumber be seen with such sorrow?
In this world or the next, I shall see thee tomorrow.
O, my life, my love, never utter a sigh!
We said only Goodnight and not Goodbye.

A Child No More

Written when I was a teenager. Obviously!

I'm a child no more.
You can't shut me out.
I know I'm the 'she'
That you're talking about.

It's the same broken record
That plays all the time.
Your lives are so boring
You want to rule mine.

If you don't change your ways,
I'll break down this door
And then maybe you'll see
I'm a child no more.

Sixty Minutes

The blue lines are contrast; the red is a wall.
The cameras remind us that 'winner takes all'.
We think it's their fault, yet they cannot be blamed
For taking the glory and leaving the pain.
"At least you got this far," we're told,
But silver can never compare with gold.
We hear their manager, staff and crowd
Say, "Well done, boys, you did us proud."
Us and them, alike and apart;
We're all in the business of breaking hearts.

Smells Like Team Spirit

Not actually sure when I wrote this but probably between 2002-2004.

The sun shines down on this field of play;
It shall set our hearts aflame.
Strange thing indeed: a few mistakes
And all hopes are drowned in the rain.
Spirit me far from this shameful place
Where sorrow soaks the bleachers
And a song, bedazzling in rivals' colours
Rings out of mocking speakers:

"A denial, a denial, a denial..."
